纳米尺寸的同轴电缆传输可见光

为了制作纳米尺寸的同轴电缆,研究人员先取一段碳纳米管(a),在其外包复氧化铝绝缘层(b),最后再加上铬涂层(c)。
同轴电缆已经在通讯前沿领域使用了几十年,经过波士顿学院(美国麻州,Chestnut Hill; www.bc.edu)一个研究小组的努力,不久之后,在医疗行业将可以采用纳米级同轴电缆传导电磁波。

同轴电缆通常由里外两层导线构成,两者由一层绝缘层分隔。该研究小组把他们的微型电缆称为nanocoax,其结构和普通同轴电缆相同,只是尺寸缩小了1万倍。纳米电缆的直径为300nm,内部为碳纳米管,外层为铬,中间是氧化铝绝缘层。

该大学物理系主任及该项目研究员Michael Naughton说:“众所周知,这种里外两层导线的结构能够高效地传输电磁能量及电磁波,光只不过是电磁光谱的另一部分。”

Naughton说,同轴电缆能够有效传输波长比其直径大得多的电磁波,基于这一点,研究者大大缩小了电缆的尺寸。人们一般认为光不能通过一个直径比介于300到800纳米之间的波长小很多的小孔,但这个研究项目推翻了此理论。

Naughton指出,光其实能够在传统的同轴电缆中传输,例如,可以用手电筒照射电缆,问题是光波传不远。而nanocoax却能成功地将红光和绿光从电缆的一端传输到另一端,这是通过在电缆的一端伸出一段碳纳米管作为光天线来实现的。

Naughton说:“Nanocoax具有我们所熟悉的传统同轴电缆的所有特性,两者的功能几乎一模一样,电磁波在该纳米电缆中传递的长度不是几公里,也不是米或毫米级,而是几十微米,我估计可能达到100微米。我们不打算让它跨越两座建筑物,而是在纳米级操纵光波,对于实现某些功能来说,上述距离已经足够了。”

纳米同轴电缆除了可以用于提高太阳能使用效率和光学计算外,还可能在医疗行业具有广阔前景。Naughton认为,该电缆将可用于黄斑变性眼疾患者的视网膜移植,或体内单分子病原体的检测。

Naughton说:“这将是对现有技术的巨大改进,包括植入式望远镜或其他能够从照相机接收光波并传递电信号的植入设备。以后不再需要导线,单靠一块小小的芯片就能够应付自如。”

该项目的其他研究员包括波士顿学院的Kris Kempa、任志峰博士和博士后研究员Jakub Rybczynski,他们的研究结果发表在1月出版的《应用物理快报》(Applied Physics Letters)上。
