Sono-Tek Corp. (www.sono-tek.com), which provides ultrasonic atomizing nozzle systems for the application of thin-film coatings, recently announced that it will provide local laboratory testing services to customers in China, Korea, Germany and Taiwan. Ultrasonic nozzles are well suited for a multitude of medical applications due to their very precise, non-clogging, repeatable spray performance and very low flow rate capabilities. To learn more about the company’s China strategy, CMDM interviewed Steve Harshbarger, Vice President and Director of Sono-Tek.
CMDM: Sono-Tek has a tradition of providing laboratory testing services to customers. Specifically, how does this benefit customers?
Harshbarger: Sono-Tek has offered laboratory testing services in our New York office for more than 15 years. The ability to provide testing services for unique coating applications allows customers to establish proof of concept that the ultrasonic coating method will or will not meet their requirements. Our laboratory team has 30+ years of combined ultrasonic coating expertise, and it has a very high success rate of achieving the desired thin-film coating results.â¨â¨
CMDM: How long has Sono-Tek been serving the Chinese market? Please describe your current presence and network in China?
Harshbarger: Sono-Tek has been providing equipment to the China market for 20 years, with the majority of our business and expansion in China happening in the last eight years. We have a direct Hong Kong-based office with a well-established distributor network that provides both service and sales support throughout China.
CMDM: Where is the new laboratory facility in China located?
Harshbarger: Sono-Tek's new laboratory facility will be located in our distributor’s office in Shanghai. The lab will be staffed by our trained distribution personnel and supported by our Hong Kong staff.
CMDM: How would you characterize the Chinese market in general? What is Sono-Tek’s long-term strategy in this part of the world?
Harshbarger: Sono-Tek sees China as a key expansion area for our ultrasonic coating equipment. We have seen consistent growth in our China sales over the past 10 years, and predict this to continue. We are expanding our local service support network to support the needs of the China market. Our new laboratory in China is part of this expansion plan. It is often difficult for China-based customers to visit our laboratory in New York: giving them the option of testing in a laboratory located in China is a much easier and more attractive option.
